A Short Story!
The story of two friends...
Two college friends from India who were different in many respects (and who were no good at what they went to college for), had one thing in common – both had a great passion for great drinks. They started out trying different varieties of sugary syrups and fresh fruit juices and slowly graduated up the ladder to wine, and then to beer and then to hard liquor. This ‘graduation’ took about five years and six months in all!
After a drink, they would discuss, argue and debate about what made the drink good or bad. In a short while, they became such connoisseurs in assessing a drink that they could tell the ingredients of a whisky just by sniffing the air – even if the bottle is uncorked in the adjacent room.
One fine morning, on a holiday, the two friends set out on a boating trip with a bottle of whisky. They sailed the boat in the calm sea and talked merrily. Soon, they were far away from the shore. All of a sudden, the sky grew dark. A high wind started blowing hard. The sea became rough. The boat tossed up and down in the stormy sea. Luckily, the two friends saw a plank floating in the sea. So they jumped into the sea and caught on to it.
After many days the storm subsided and the plank drifted to a lovely little island in the Pacific. It was evening and the sun still shone suspended brightly in the western horizon like a divine orange blob. The little island had beautiful hills with oak trees, and vineyards on the lower slopes, and barley fields on the plains, and a variety of botanicals all around. A happy little river gurgled and meandered through the valley bed. Little birds chirped gleefully. A farmer’s song wafted in the air from afar. Someone called out from the valley below…
The setting was just right for a good drink they thought.
“Where is the whisky bottle?” asked one friend.
“On the sea bed” replied the other.
“What!!!
“Don’t worry, we’ll set up our distillery and make our own whisky right here. We have a good source of clean water, we have oak trees to age our drink and yes, I am sure the farmers will lend us some yeast.”
“Good Idea. But what do we name our distillery?”
“Since we hail from India, and since we are now in the Pacific, let’s call it ‘Indo Pacific Beverages’.”
“Fantastic! But that’s a mouthful. Let’s call it ‘Indobev’ for ease.”
“Done. Cheers!”
